3. Paying Zakat

Zakah is the third obligation. It means that every Muslim, who possesses adequate amount of wealth or property, is required to give away two and a half percent of his income, business or wealth in the name of Allah positively. He is allowed to donate even above this limit in the form of Sadqat and Khairat. Allah warns in the Quran that if those persons who are supposed to pay Zakah do not do so, shall be subjected to extreme torment after death. This wealth shall become an Achilles’ Heel for him later on. The gold and silver that he had amassed and had not spent duly in the way of Allah shall be melted and he will be branded with this molten alloy over his forehead and sides.
A Muslim believes that the wealth that he possesses is only a deposit, entrusted with him by Allah. A financial crunch cannot happen by spending it in the way of Allah. It is his kindness that he has enjoined us to give away only a miniscule part of the wealth and not the total wealth to his creations like the poor and the downtrodden. Furthermore, he has even promised rewards for fulfilling this obligation.
